Hey You!
Today I want to share a poem that I was reminded of this week with the intention of sparking some introspection. I wrote this poem at least 7 years ago and while I’m not exactly sure of the specific year or date in general, my last edited date(according to my notes) is May 2015 so…. well…. long enough ago lol.
That being said, it may not be the best written or most comprehensible piece ( to put it softly lol) but the meaning is still as potent. It felt appropriate to post this now for a multitude of reasons. I was reminded of this poem when I was recording my most recent episode of my podcast- Ep 7 and I decided to share. It seems very fitting for the topic of Identity which was being discussed. I hope this is of some value to you. If nothing else, it should make you think.
Well, Here it goes;
Vanity upon vanity, I say
The very thing that still remains top priority on priority-displaced minds
I can’t help but ask however, what happens when war is waged and all is lost?
Keeping in mind that we battle not against flesh and blood
And what happens if the spiritual war rids you of all you’ve got?
Remembering that all physical things are perishable
What will you say if your ‘best friend’ whom you loved so much gets life snatched from them in the blink of an eye?
What if your beloved family suddenly disappeared, no clues as to why?
If your hard-earned money is mysteriously laundered and your priceless jewels vanish?
If despite all your efforts and all your gorging, you still end up famished?
What would you do if your so-called escape route ‘music’ has nowhere to be heard?
Perhaps the pumping speakers blew up… or for some reason, those ears became deaf
What happens when “comfort-food” is no more and production comes to a halt?
When the “calm-your-head-drug”-weed, is nowhere to be found?
What if the rough and tacky cigarette stud that was your source of warmth becomes unaffordable?
And the “Fantasy world” of movies has no means to be viewed? Not even cable
If sleep-“the highway route out of misery” ceases to knock your eyelids shut
And sleeping tablets to counter insomnia are driving you nuts?
Imagine if that stunning, in-vogue, “happening” car is robbed within a minute’s tick
And the house you adored and found your pride in, by fire is licked
Whats left for you if the ‘sooth-my-nerves’ shisha ceases to give you rest?
And your old comfort zone becomes a nightmare?
Imagine if your sharp, tanned and flawless face was burnt badly –leaving a scab beyond the magic of make-up’s repair
And your sweet, silky eloquent voice took to its heels by morning
If all your fancy clothes were the victims of a robbery
Would you still believe God then when He tells you, “You’re beautiful my darling”?
Imagine your craft-wise skilled arms are too frail to work
And your runner-legs lost their ability to move to the detriment of your sport
How about the ‘wise-amongst-men’ guy? What would happen if his brain froze?
When intellect and degrees can no longer favour him I suppose
When all hope in material things and in the physical goes right down the drain and there is nothing more to distract you from the emptiness on the inside
Nothing to shift your attention from deep skin-searing, heart breaking and gaping wound
Alas, nowhere to hide
When the blind-eye you turned is no longer able to disregard reality
Will you finally find safety in the one and only supreme entity?
You find yourself at a crossroad and two options await you! They always have.
LIFE. TRUE LIFE.
OR
DEATH
I implore you to choose life
True Life which is in God , in Jesus, is the only choice that doesn’t leave you at the mercy of variants
When you choose Him
You choose an imperishable source, the ONLY imperishable source
You find security. You can finally be secure in your identity
You find a friend, you find family
You find a renewed mind, you find love that is kind
You earn a sound mind and you identify what’s really worthy of sacrifice
And even if you’ve got nothing, somehow you can truly say, “I still possess everything”( 2 cor 6:10)
You find peace beyond comprehension, and in your fathers house, you may even own a mansion
You bask in enthusiasm at the hearing of the truth, at the awareness that it is everlasting food
You find constant riches, you charge power in the Holy Spirit
You find wisdom from God and you finally welcome His kingdom
Endurance is found in your hope in Jesus and totality in the body of Christ
He offers the very best trade-offs, no true disciple can deny
Beauty for ashes, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness
Light in the darkness and for mourning, now you get the oil of gladness
You get a new world inheritance, a new name and rest in Jesus
Purpose-what God has designed, and not vain ambition then becomes your utmost desire
You find a refuge, you find a fortress, you find a shield, you find a healer
You find it ALL in Christ, our great and mighty redeemer
Amidst the mirage of everything we appear to have
We really have nothing if we don’t have Him
It’s time to stand by the only true CONSTANT and lay down the idols
Commit to He who was, is, and is to come. The ‘I AM’ , a forever lasting title
Put aside VARIABLES and finally find safety
Outside of those which are, but in reality will forever cease to be
We need not settle for a ‘maybe’
